Carrum Downs is a Melbourne suburb with a population of 17,213. It is 36km to the south-east of Melbourne’s central business district and is part of the City of Frankston.

History

The name Carrum Downs comes from the Aboriginal name for the area, Karrum Karrum. Thi means “boomerang” and referred to the shape of the beach when viewed from the local hills.

The first settlement of Carrum Downs was built by the Brotherhood of St Laurence during the Great Depression. Before government reform in 1994, the majority of the area was in the City of Cranbourne. It gradually became a village for aged persons after World War II.

Carrum Downs is home to Victoria’s largest Hindu Temple, the Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple. There are also many public parks and community services, including schools and healthcare centres.
