History

Carlton North began with the founding of the Melbourne General Cemetery in 1853. Early facilities included a bluestone quarry and Collingwood Stockdale, which has served as both an insane asylum and a primary school. Lots of Victorian and Edwardian houses were built, although gentrification has left many unrecognisable.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Carlton North’s Rathdowne Street (or “Village”, as it’s known) is a thriving hub of high-end restaurants and boutique indie shops. As well as being the birthplace of Carlton Football Club, Carlton North is also the site of the first La Porchetta. Pubs like the Kent, the Brandon and the Great Northern draw big crowds, and Princes Park is a popular leisure spot.
