Camberwell is an affluent suburb, located 10km east of Melbourne’s central business district. It has a population of over 20,000 people and was chosen as one of 26 Principal Activity Centres in the 2030 Metropolitan Strategy.

History

Camberwell is named after the Camberwell Junction, an intersection of three roads in South London. It is believed the area reminded one early settler of a similar road layout in his hometown.

The area was developed in the 1880s as a result of the expansion of the rail network which connected Melbourne with its surrounding suburbs.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There is plenty to see and do in Camberwell with a shopping strip located on Burke Road near the Camberwell tram junction. There is also a large Market, which has been running since 1976. The market takes place on Sundays and has over 370 stallholders!

Camberwell is also home to several large parks and reserves including Frog Park Reserve and Bowen Gardens.
