History
Bunyip is a word derived from the Aboriginal word ‘Bunyeep.’ Bunyip is supposedly a spirit which preys on humans that drink near the water it lives in. The Kulin nation and Bunurong people consider Bunyip to be of great importance. European settlers first lived nearby in the 1840s, and the first set who arrived found the marshlands difficult to cross. Bunyip was a successful commercial area by the 1900s.
