The suburb of Brunswick West is situated 6km north of Melbourne’s central business district. The area is mainly a residential suburb and there is also some light industry. It is located near to the Tullamarine Freeway and has a population of over 13,000 people.

History

The Brunswick Post Office was opened on 10th of March 1913 and there is also a Moonee Valley Licensed Post Office situated on Melville Road. Before 1838, Brunswick West was inhabited by the local Aborigines who gave it the name “Boort Moornmount Bullarto” which means very windy country. The only original purchaser to settle on the land was James Simpson in 1841 and he left the area in 1852.

Brunswick West has 2 government primary schools and 2 commercial centres that are made up of traditional shopping strips. There is also a small shopping centre in Union Square on Grantham Street. There are good transport links and the area has cycle lanes including the Creek and Capital City cycle trails.
