Bright is a town in the north east of Victoria, in the Ovens Valley. It is 321km from Melbourne, and 77km from Wangaratta. Bright is in the Alpine Shire local government area. It has a population of 2,165.

History

Bright first explored by European settlers William Hovell and Hamilton Hume in 1824. The town was named after John Bright, who was an orator and politician from Great Britain. Bright was a gold-mining area in the Victorian period, and disturbances occurred when Chinese and Anglo-Irish miners fought over the last of the gold.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bright is home to the Bright Autumn Colours Festival, which is an annual celebration of the stunning colours of the falling leaves. Many people visit Bright for hiking and adventure sports. There are paragliding festivals and competitions at various times during the year. A local history museum is found in the preserved railway stations for history buffs.
