Box Hill is a suburb with a population of over 9000, 14km east of Melbourne’s CBD. It is a major hub in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
History
Box Hill was first settled by the squatter Arundel Wrighte in 1983. Opened in 1861, Box Hill Post Office was the first official use of the Box Hill name. It was named after a town near the postmaster’s place of birth, Box Hill, in Surrey, England.
Once a big independent city, Box Hill merged into Melbourne as part of its eastern expansion in the late 1950s. It’s known for having a large Asian population and features many Asian restaurants and shops.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Box Hill has a shopping precinct with shops along Station Street and Whitehorse Road, and two shopping centres which merged in 2007.
The suburb is home to many recreational services, sports clubs and sports centres, and Box Hill Hospital.
