Based in regional Victoria, Barnawartha is a town on the Hume Highway. This small town is 299km away from Melbourne and lies on the Indigo Creek. According to the 2006 census, Barnawartha has a small population of 518 people.

History

Before the town was settled in 1860, Gustav and William Baumgarten were the area’s major landowners. William later opened a winery on the Murray River, called Bogong. Before this, he served time in prison for helping the infamous Ned Kelly.

In August 1860, Barnawartha opened its first Post Office.

Barnawartha is a quiet town and does not offer much for travellers. For locals, the town sports several historic buildings. It also has a pub, and the post office. The town’s sportier residents take advantage of the local golf club. The Barnawartha Golf Club sits in the Havelock Street Recreation Reserve.
