Bacchus Marsh is a rural centre and regional locality found in Victoria. It lies 57km northwest of the state capital Melbourne and 15km west of Melton. The urban centre has a population of around 20,000 and the suburb by the same name is home to over 5,750.
History
Bacchus Marsh was named after one of its first settlers, Captain William Henry Bacchus. He saw value in the area due to it being situated on two rivers – the Lerderderg and the Werribee.
It was traditionally a market garden area that produced a lot of the region’s fruits and vegetables. Recently it has become the main commuter town on the Melbourne- Ballarat corridor. It’s the largest rural area in the local government area of the Shire of Moorabool.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Bacchus Marsh is home to Maddingley Park, a popular picnic area. It is also home to Nieuwesteeg Heritage Rose Garden. This garden houses a collection of rare and unusual roses.
