Welcome to Alexandra, VIC
Alexandra is a town with 2,700 inhabitants in the Shire of Murrindindi. It lies 140km north-east of Melbourne at the junction of Goulburn Valley Highway and Maroondah Highway.
History
The first settlers arrived in Alexandra in the 1860s. The first post office opened in 1867 under the name of Redgate, which was what Alexandra was called back then. The town’s name change could have been prompted a statue of Alexandra of Denmark, which the shire got as a present. Another theory is that it got its name from three men, all called Alexander, who found gold in the region in 1866.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Nestled in the mountains, Alexandra offers scenic views and lots of outdoor activities. Many travellers pass through the town on their way from Melbourne to the nearby ski resort Mt Buller. It is worth making the stop to visit attractions such as the Timber Tramway and Museum and explore the banks of the Goulburn River.
