FAQs

  • What is the difference between hard water & soft water?

Parts of the Australia have what is commonly referred to as "hard water," & people who live in these areas battle the problems that hard water creates. The most common defence against hard water, which is a nuisance but not a health hazard, is to install a home water softener. Water softening involves exchanging calcium & magnesium minerals present in the water - which cause the hardness - with sodium.

  • What causes clogged drains?

There are a number of common issues that create a need for drain cleaning. Soap all by itself is not a problem, but combine that with hair & there can be an issue. Another common problem is quilted toilet paper, which doesn't break apart as easily as non-quilted brands. Believe it or not, clumped cat litter can also become a major source of clogging if flushed down the toilet.

  • When do I need plumbing drain cleaning services?

Foreign objects lodged in your toilet or garbage disposal, completely blocked drains & broken pipes are common reasons to bring in plumbing drain cleaning services. If you experience these symptoms after a storm or natural disaster, call in a drain cleaning company right away; the professionals can diagnose serious issues such as major damage to the main drain pipe or sewage system. Sometimes a video inspection system is the only way to see the damage.

  • How do I fix my leaking tap?

Unfortunately a leaking tap can not usually be fixed just by replacing the jumper valve washer. There is also an O-ring that would need to be replaced & the brass body inside the wall or below the sink that the spindle sits in needs to be machined (re-seated). All working parts need to be cleaned & lubricated and the system needs to be flushed correctly on completion. Our company is stocked with all the right parts & equipment to ensure that your taps will not leak again.

  • Why does my sink take a long time to drain?

The kitchen sink has a substantial amount of fat & grease run down it washed off your pots, pan & plates etc. this could cause a build up in your pipe & slow your drain. This could also happen at your basin sink & shower drain from a build up of hair soap. Stephen Keene Plumbing & Contracting offers several drain solutions to resolve all your Drainage issues.

  • Would it cost me much to have my toilets & taps replaced?

It all depends on your tastes & budget. Stephen Keene Plumbing & Contracting can supply & install quality chrome tap ware, baths & toilets at cost-effective prices.

  • What do I need to if I have an emergency & my pipes are leaking?

If it is hot water there will be a shut off tap, usually at the base of the hot water heater. Turn clockwise & then turn on a hot tap to release the pressure from the hot water heater. If the hot water heater is leaking, employ the same procedure, also turning off the power to the heater – you will find a switch in the meter box, for a gas unit a gas tap will be at the base of the heater – turn the valve so the lever is across the direction of the pipe.

  • How do I shut off the cold water?

For cold water, there will be a shut off valve at the meter. Turn the tap clockwise, if the leak is inside the home turn on a external hose tap on so the water runs out side, also turn power off or gas supply to your hot water heater.

  • What do I do if you have no hot water if the water coming out of the hot tap is not hot?

If your hot water heater is big taller than 1.4 meters & it is electric it is likely it is on off peak, you will need to ring your electricity supplier there number will be on your electricity bill. It is likely that the off peak is not working. Once you have spoken to your supplier & they have checked the off-peak switch in your meter box & it is all ok it is most likely that there is a fault with the heater in that case call Stephen Keene Plumbing & Contracting.

  • What if my hot water heater is gas and I have no hot water?

If your hot water heating unit is gas & your other gas appliances are working fine then call Stephen Keene Plumbing & Contracting.
