Somerset is a small township that lies west of Burnie, Tasmania. The town is part of the Waratah/Wynyard municipal area and has a population of over 3,000.
History
In 1864, The Somerset River Cam Post Office opened. It was later renamed Somerset Cam in around 1934 and then Somerset in 1963.
It is located on the estuary of the Cam River midway between the township of Wynyard and the city of Bernie. There is a beach that stretches the full length of the Somerset coastline.
The Bass Highway connects the town to the surrounding areas and runs through the town along the coast.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Somerset has a number of small businesses that line the main street. These include Gunns Veneers and the Burnie branch of William Adams.
It’s also home to a football field, a soccer field, tennis courts, a recreation centre, and a surf lifesaving club.
