Lenah Valley is a suburb in Hobart, TAS. North of the CBD between the City of Glenorchy, New Town, and Mt Stuart, it sits on the foothills of Mt Wellington. 5km from Hobart and in the federal electorate of Denison, it has a population of over 5,800.

History

The suburb was originally known as Kangaroo Bottom and later Kangaroo Valley. It gets its current name from “Lenah”, the native Aboriginal word for kangaroo.

The eastern end of the suburb was first settled near Mt Stuart. In the late 1930s, the Newlands manor house was built. This house led to the development of the surrounding area and made sure that quality homes were built nearby to support the area’s reputation.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Lenah Valley is home to two primary schools. The main recreational area is John Turnbull Park and there is a small retail shopping strip on Augusta Road.
