History

The first Europeans settled in the area in the early years of the 17th century. The first settlement was called Patersonia. The name was later changed Launceston, the New South Wales Governor’s place of birth in Cornwall. It is a city of many “firsts”. For example, it was the first Australian town with an underground sewer system.

Launceston is a green place full of parks and natural wonders. The city’s most popular tourist attraction is the Cataract Gorge. It is less than 2 kilometres away from the city centre.
