Cygnet is a town within Huon Valley in southern Hobart. It is 18km south of Huonville. The population of Cygnet is 1,454, with 80 per cent of residents born in Australia.

History

The name Cygnet comes from the area’s original name Port des Cygnes Noir (French for the Port of Black Swans). This was named by a French explorer Bruni D’Entrecasteaux in the late 1700s, because he saw many black swans in the Huon River. Although the name was changed to Lovett, the town officially became Cygnet in 1915.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Cygnet is famous for its apple, cherry and berry orchards, which dot the hills. Craft shops, art studios and art galleries make the area popular with artists and musicians.

The town boasts an award-winning winery Hartzview Vineyard. Another highlight is the Heritage Pickers Hut Village and the Cygnet Living History Museum.
