Carrick is a small historic village in Tasmania. 17km west of Launceston on the banks of the Liffey River, it has a population of around 450 people.

History

Carrick’s first land grant was in 1818. A decade later, William Bryan started building a wooden mill on the river’s bank. The town formed due to the construction of the mill and plots were sold in 1838.

In 1841, Carrick Post Office opened. By the end of that year, the town was home to four dwellings, a blacksmith shop, a police station, a flour mill, and a hotel built by John Archer.

Today it is mainly a residential area housing people who work in Launceston and the rural areas that surround the town.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The historic village is known for its association with horse racing and is home to both a trotting club and a trotting track. Carrick is also home to Carrick Speedway.
