Eye specialist Melbourne surgeon Dr. Mark Medownick established the Medownick Eye Clinic as part of the Epworth medical complex in Melbourne in 1984. In 1994, we changed our name to the Medownick Laser Eye Clinic, when Dr Medownick was the first eye surgeon in Australia to perform laser vision correction for long-sightedness.

At Medownick Laser Clinic, we work as a team of highly skilled opthamologists, clinical optometrists, opthamologists, orthoptists, qualified nurses & trained counsellors, all committed to seeing you achieve a successful outcome. We make every effort to ensure that your laser vision or refractive vision procedure will be event free & will provide you with perfect vision or the best possible vision.

At Medownick, we are naturally proud of the advanced surgical eye care we are able to offer you. A combination of surgical skills and state-of-the-art next generation laser eye technology in a friendly caring environment, will reduce discomfort, minimise your recovery time, and in the end, provide you with a much improved, and more flexible lifestyle.

FAQs

  • If I don't get a full correction, will I be able to wear contacts after laser eye surgery?

Very rarely, patients do not get a full correction after laser eye surgery and will want to wear contact lenses. The general rule is: if you could wear contact lenses before laser eye surgery, then you should be able to wear them afterwards. To discuss how we can improve your vision with laser eye surgery, call us free on 1800 Dr Eyes (1800 373 937) to talk to one of our patient education counselors now or contact us online for your free laser eye surgery assessment today.

  • Do I need to wear an eye patch after the laser eye surgery?

No, you do not need to wear an eye patch after laser eye surgery, but you will be asked to wear a clear protective eye shields for the first 4 nights after laser eye surgery. Some patients may wear a protective contact lens for a few days to promote healing. • Are there other procedures or technology on the horizon that I should consider?

There are always new procedures and technologies under investigation. Not everyone is a candidate for laser eye surgery. After a thorough evaluation, we will discuss any viable alternative procedures that might be right for your unique visual needs and your eyes. • Will the laser eye surgery cause cataracts, or influence the treatment of cataracts?

Laser eye surgery does not cause cataracts and does not affect the removal of cataracts. To discuss how we can improve your vision with laser eye surgery, call us free on 1800 Dr Eyes (1800 373 937) to talk to one of our patient care team now or contact us online for your free laser eye surgery assessment today.

  • Does Laser Eye Surgery hurt?

Before you are accompanied to the Laser Room-and a changed life, we will give you a mild oral sedative to help you relax. We shall also put anaesthetic drops in your eyes. There's no pain at all during a Laser Eye Surgery procedure, although at times you may feel a light touch or gentle pressure on your eye, which can be slightly uncomfortable for a matter of seconds.

  • How long will it take to see my final result after Laser Eye Surgery?

Usually by the time you come for your first post operative appointment you will have better than driving vision, although it could take a little longer in some cases. Every patient heals at a different rate. Visual acuity improves over a period of a few weeks, but you already can enjoy your natural vision.

  • What if I move during the Laser Eye Surgery?

Patients worry about this a great deal, and their fear is unnecessary. Everyone moves during the Laser Eye Surgery procedure. The ultra fast ALLEGRETTO WAVE® Eye-Q eye tracker follows the fastest eye movements within only a few milliseconds. Also, we can instantly stop the laser eye surgery treatment whenever we want. There is virtually nothing you could do with your eyes during your Laser Eye Surgery to compromise your laser eye surgery, or put you at risk.

  • Will I be able to see during Laser Eye Surgery?

During the Laser Eye Surgery procedure you will be able to see light, although your vision may be slightly blurred. You will be able to see a blinking green light on which you will focus your eyes. You do not see any manipulation or scary instruments near your eye during your Laser Eye Surgery.

  • Can Astigmatism be treated with Laser Eye Surgery?

Yes. It is a common misconception that Astigmatism cannot be treated with Laser Eye Surgery. This is not the case-most people with Astigmatism respond very well to Laser Eye Surgery. We have corrected with Refractive Eye Surgery up to 14 dioptres of Astigmatism (average 1-3). Our Laser has got a very good track record in treating Astigmatism. Most of our patients can see clearly without glasses or contact lenses after Laser Eye Surgery for treatment of Astigmatism.

  • Can I go away on holiday or travel by air immediately after Laser Eye Surgery?

We suggest that you wait at least 1 week before flying domestically and 2 weeks flying internationally after your Laser Eye Surgery. The air conditioning used in aeroplanes can lead to dry and irritated eyes, causing discomfort. When you do fly, use lubricating eye drops to retain moisture in the eyes. In terms of holiday restrictions, the main thing to be aware of is avoiding the water. You must wait 2 weeks before going in the water.
