Willunga is a town that sits south of Adelaide in the local government area of the City of Onkaparinga. 47km from the CBD, it has a population of around 2,500.

History

Willunga gets its name from the aboriginal word ‘willangga’ which means, “the locality of green trees”. The post office opened in 1839.

The town lies in the famous McLaren Vale wine growing region and is sometimes considered part of the Adelaide metropolitan area. It’s connected to McLaren Vale by a cycle path that runs along a former railway line. It’s not too far from the beaches of Aldinga Bay.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town is home to many festivals throughout the year. It’s the start and finish of the fourth leg of the Tour Down Under. It is also home to the Fleurieu Folk Festival, the Almond Blossom Festival, and the Willunga Christmas Tree Festival.
