Walkerville lies just four kilometres from Adelaide’s city centre. It is recognised as being one of South Australia’s most prosperous suburbs. The population is around 2,400 people.

History

Early settlers arrived in the area in the 1830s and the town itself was named after Captain John Walker from the Royal Navy. He later moved away from the region but the name remained.

Residents pushed for, and won, independence from the larger Yatala District Council in the 1850s. Its boundaries remained the same until alterations in the 1970s.

In 1896 the town’s post office opened, followed shortly after by a Town Hall and library. Many historic buildings still remain today.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today the town boasts two primary schools. Among its range of historic buildings is St Andrew’s Church whose bells still ring out over the town.
