Renmark is a town in the rural Riverland area of South Australia, 254km northeast of Adelaide. 31m above sea level, it has a population of around 7,500.
History
The land was originally inhabited by the Naralte tribe. The name of the town is thought to refer to an Aboriginal word that means “Red Mud”. Alternatively, it could be derived from “Bookmark”, the station founded by the Chambers brothers. The first use of the name “Renmark Flat” appeared in newspapers in 1888.
The first European to travel through the area was Captain Charles Sturt in 1830. In 1887, a settlement in the area began to grow when the Renmark Irrigation Settlement was set up by George and William Chaffey.

The town is a multicultural centre for the Riverland area. The town is well-known for growing grapes, citrus fruits, tomatoes, wheat, and wool. The town also is home to a modern shopping complex.
