Welcome to Port Wakefield, SA
This small town in SA was the first to be settled north of Adelaide by the then government. It now has a population of just under 500 residents, but welcomes many commuters passing through the area.
History
Originally titled Port Henry, its name was later altered to reflect its location on the Wakefield River. The town has historical links with copper mining and was used as a drop-off point for cargo from the nearby smelter at Burra.
When the railway opened in 1857, Port Wakefield was no longer needed and the copper traffic ceased. Agricultural produce took its place and lands opened up along the river for farming. The increase in activity and trade meant the railway was extended up to the town.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Today the town is an important stopping-off point for many travellers. It sits just south of the intersection between the Yorke Peninsula and Copper Coast Highway. There are a number of roadhouses, truck stops, motels and caravan parks in the area.
