Payneham is a northeastern suburb of Adelaide in the City of Norwood Payneham St Peters. It has a population of more than 2,100 and is located six kilometres north-east of Adelaide’s city centre.

History

Payneham is part of a string of suburbs in Adelaide’s north-east that is home to a high proportion of Adelaide’s Italian-Australian and French-Australian residents. Many of can be traced back to the large-scale migration following the Second World War.

Payneham Post Office opened on 18 July 1850 and was renamed Marden in 1968.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is home to a number of public art installations. Many of these are sited near the library. Tourists can also do the Payneham Cemetery Walk. The cemetery was first established in 1848 and has strong links to the foundation and settlement of South Australia.
