Nuriootpa is the economic heart of the Barossa Valley in South Australia. It lies about 75km northeast of the state capital Adelaide and has a population of 5,700 people. When travelling by car, you can get to Adelaide in about an hour.
History
The name Nuriootpa comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “meeting place”. The first Europeans arrived in the area in 1838. They were a group of explorers including John Hill and John Oakden, who travelled from Adelaide to the Murray River. Since the 1930s the town has consistently been praised for its excellent community development.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Nuriootpa is a picturesque place. Many of the buildings along the main street have grapevines climbing up them. As soon as you leave the city centre, you find yourself among a stunning landscape. The area is home to lots of vineyards and many famous Australian wineries.
