Mt Gambier is a city about 450 kilometres south-east of Adelaide with a population of over 28,900. It has the second largest population in South Australia.

History

The Buandig people once lived in Mt Gambier before the Europeans arrived at the area. They called the city “egree belum” which means “home of the eagle hawk.”

The first post office opened in 1846 and a man called John Byng built the Mt Gambier Hotel in 1847. It was in 1849 when Dr Edward Wehl arrived at the area to begin a flour-milling operation.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mt Gambier has a few shopping centres and retail outlets including some major department stores. The city is also home to the Civic Centre, which includes the Riddoch Art Gallery and The Corner.

The town hosts the Generations in Jazz Festival every year and attracts a crowd of around 3,000. Mt Gambier is also the location of the 120 mile Mt Gambier Gift, which is a professional footrace held annually on the first Saturday in December.
