Moonta is a town in South Australia on the Yorke Peninsula. 165km north-northwest of Adelaide, it has a population of over 680 shared with other localities in the State Suburb of Moonta.
History
Moonta is one of three towns known as the Copper Coast or Little Cornwall due to their shared copper mining history. The broader Moonta urban centre which includes Moonta Bay, North Moonta, and Port Hughes has a population of over 3,600.
The area was home to the Narungga people prior to European settlement. The name is thought to come from the Aboriginal word “munta-muntara” or “moontera” meaning “thick scrub place” or “impenetrable scrub”.

The Kernewek Lowender Cornish Festival, a popular three-day event, is held every odd year in the Copper Coast towns.
There are many places to eat in the town centre including Moonta Bay and Pt. Hughes. The nearby locations are popular destinations for holidaymakers.
