Mitcham is an southern suburb of Adelaide.

The City of Mitcham was founded in 1853 and was the first municipal area formally created in South Australia after the City of Adelaide. Originally laid out as a village quite separate from Adelaide, Mitcham Village was ancillary to the large sheep station then at Brown Hill Creek, which belonged to the South Australia Company. Situated at the base of the Adelaide Hills, the view from Mitcham’s Windy Point is said to give the best night time view of twinkling city lights in the Southern Hemisphere.

The suburb was named after Mitcham in Surrey, England, the birthplace of the manager of the South Australian Company, William Giles. Mitcham today still retains much of its original colonial architecture and is one of the oldest European settlements in the State. The Mitcham area provides a number of opportunities for exploring the heritage of the area. The Colonel Light Gardens, which were developed in the 1920s, are the best preserved example of Garden City planning in Australia, and are also recognised internationally.
