Meningie is a town in South Australia on the southeast side of Lake Albert. On the Princes Highway near The Coorong and located 143km southeast of Adelaide, it has a population of around 1,000 people.

History

The town was first surveyed in 1866. It is located on the shore of Lake Albert which is part of the Murray-Darling Basin. Meningie has many attractions for travellers and its lake is a popular place for jet skiing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing.

It was the first town in Australia to have ADSL broadband installed without the use of a Telstra DSLAM.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Meningie is the closest town to Coorong National Park and is home to The Meningie Cheese Factory Museum Inc., which is entirely run and owned by local volunteers.

The town has a strong sporting culture. It has a well-maintained oval, bike tracks and motocross jumps, an 18-hole golf course, an airstrip, and a local Australian rules football club.
