The popular coastal suburb of Marino overlooks the Gulf of St Vincent. It is to the south of Adelaide and has a population of 2,000 people.

History

Along with the rest of the area settlers arrived here in the late 1830s. Charles Kingston, from County Cork in Ireland, was responsible for naming the town. He was born near a prominent landmark called Marino Point. There was also a suburb of Marino in Dublin.

Land in the area was considered too poor for pastoral business, but was rich in minerals. Many mines opened in the area quarrying for limestone, quartzite and gypsum.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Quarrying is still an important industry in the area today. Tourism is also big business.

People are drawn to Marino’s beach, cycling and walking tracks. Fishing is a popular pastime, as well as snorkelling.

The well-loved Coast to Vines Rail Trail, which is now a safe trail for walkers and cyclists, starts in the town.
