The small residential town of Maitland is a short drive from the coastal town of Port Victoria. It was named after Lady Jean Maitland who was the wife of the First Lord of Kilkerran. The area is an established grain receiving depot operated by AWB Limited and has a population of just over 1,000 people.
History
The area once has an economy based on crops and copper mining. The original inhabitants of the area were the Narungga Aboriginal people. The first European settlers to move into the area were the Rogers Family who built the Ynoo homestead.
Thanks to the town’s prosperity from crops in 1910 it was claimed to be one of the most prosperous areas in Australia with more cars per person than anywhere else in the country. The area is still at the centre of the barley and wheat growing Yorke Peninsula.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Attractions in the town include that CYP National Trust Museum and St John’s Anglican Church that was built in 1874. The District Council of Yorke Building is also located in Maitland and is reputed to have been built in 1908 for the sum of £276!
