Lyndoch is a town in Barossa Valley, South Australia. Between Tanunda and Gawler on the Barossa Valley Highway 58km northwest of Adelaide, it has a population of over 1,400.

History

Lyndoch is one of the oldest towns in South Australia. It was named in 1837 by Colonel William Light to honour his friend, Lord Lynedoch. Lynedoch was Light’s captain at the Battle of Barrosa in 1811. A misspelling of his surname gives the town its name. In 1839, the town was settled and the village was laid out later.

Today, the town is mostly a service centre for the surrounding grape and wine industry. It’s also used as a dormitory town, with many of the locals commuting to Adelaide every day for employment.

The town is a stop on the Jack Bobridge Track, a shared walking and cycling path. Barossa Valley is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and is home to many wineries.
