Welcome to Kimba, SA
Kimba is a rural service town in South Australia. On the Eyre Highway at the top of Eyre Peninsula, it has a population of over 630.
History
The town takes its name from the local aboriginal word for “bushfire”. The emblem of the town is a burning bush to reflect this.
The first European to pass through the area was the explorer Edward John Eyre. Kimba was first settled in the 1870s by lease-holding pastoralists.
Kimba was connected to Port Lincoln by narrow gauge railway in 1913, which lead to many wheat farmers moving to the area. Two years later in 1915, Kimba was officially proclaimed a township.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The town features a 7-metre tall statue of a big galah, one of the most common cockatoos, next to the highway. This statue marks the halfway point between the east and west coasts of Australia.
