Happy Valley is an Adelaide suburb around 20km south of the central business district. It’s part of the City of Onkaparinga local government area. Happy Valley has a population of more than 11,300.

History

First settled by Europeans in the 1830s, Happy Valley was named by Edward Burgess. Before this, the area was inhabited by the Kaurna people. They knew it as “Warekila”, which means “place of changing winds”. Farming was the Happy Valley’s main industry for many years, until grapes were planted in the 1860s. By the 1880s, several vineyards had sprung up, and the region was known for its winemaking. The Happy Valley Reservoir was completed in 1896, and today provides water for 500,000 people across Adelaide.

Lifestyle & Entertainment

The reservoir brings a lot of tourism to Happy Valley, as the surrounding areas are home to many species of wildlife. Kangaroos, koalas and echidnas all dwell here. The suburb is bordered by two golf clubs and two parks, and features numerous shopping and dining options.
