Hahndorf is a town in the District Council of Mt Barker. It is located in the Adelaide Hills region, and is an important tourism spot for South Australia. The suburb is 28km from Adelaide’s CBD. It has a population of around 1,805.

History

Hahndorf was influenced by German culture, and many buildings in the area are designed in traditional German architectural style. The town’s name comes from Dirk Meinertz Hahn, the Danish captain of the Zebra. Hahndorf’s name changed to Ambleside after World War I, and the town’s original name was reinstated in 1935. Hahndorf is also Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement.

As an important tourist location, Hahndorf has plenty to keep visitors entertained. The local German Arms Hotel is a great spot to unwind with a drink, and many restaurants in the area also serve German cuisine. The area has plenty of sporting clubs, from lawn bowls to softball. Hahndorf has two iconic churches – St Michael’s Lutheran Church, and C3 Adelaide Hills.
