The port town on the Murray River is 100 kilometres south of Adelaide. It has a combined population with Victor Harbor of 25,800 people.
History
Goolwa is believed to mean ‘elbow’ in local Aboriginal language. Early settlers to the area in the 1830s referred to the land as The Elbow.
Plans originally were in place to make the site the capital of the colony. But the dangerous waters of the Murray Mouth meant large ships could not enter the port. By the 1850s Goolwa was Australia’s first inland port. When the railway arrived though Goolwa’s port was no longer required, instead the town turned to farming.

Today the town is a popular tourist spot, especially for residents from Adelaide. More people than ever before are moving to Goolwa, seeking a more relaxed lifestyle in Australia’s coastal communities.
Goolwa hosts the South Australian Wooden Boat Festival.
