History
The Kaurna people are the original inhabitants of the land. They called the area ‘Pattawilya’. The Kaurna people were all but wiped out by smallpox epidemics by 1836.
The name ‘Glenelg’ comes from Lord Glenelg. Lord Glenelg was a British MP and the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies.
Glenelg was established in 1836. This makes it the oldest European Settlement in mainland South Australia.

Glenelg is a popular destination for tourists. It boasts a beautiful marina and busy commercial areas.
The town is famous for its leisure attractions. ‘The Beachouse’ is an entertainment complex with waterslides, mini golf and a 5-storey play castle. There is also an old-fashioned carousel and Australia’s first single arm Ferris wheel.
