Gilles Plains is a suburb located 15km north of the Adelaide business district. It is home to a population of around 3,500 people and is a part of the City of Tea Tree Gully local government area.

History

Gilles Plains takes its name from Osmond Gilles who was the first Colonial Treasurer. Gilles owned a sheep station in the area near the Torrens River.

As suggested by its name, the land which now makes up Gilles Plains provided early settlers with the ideal conditions for growing hay and by 1874, it was home to the largest hay farm in South Australia.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Gilles Plains is a mainly residential town and has a number of educational facilities such as Burc College, St. Pauls College and Wandana Primary School. There is also a large shopping centre which has several shops, cafes and food outlets.
