Gawler is the oldest country-town in South Australia, and lies 40-45km north of the centre of Adelaide. It is close to the major wine producing district of Barossa Valley. It has a population of 24,000.
History
Gawler takes its name from George Gawler, the second Governor of the colony of South Australia. It lies at the junction of two tributaries of the Gawler River.
The suburb was established through a 4,000-acre “special survey”. This was applied for by Henry Dundas Murray, John Reid, and ten other colonists.
Gawler succeeded early due to the discovery of copper nearby. It had a horse street tram service from 1979 to 1931.

The suburb is a commercial centre for the Mid-North districts of South Australia and a commuter town for Adelaide.
The Gawler Visitor Information Centre attracts 2,500 visitors per month and provides information on things to do, places to stay, and local history.
