Echunga is a small town located 34km southeast of Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills. 8km from Hahndorf in the local government area of the District Council of Mouth Baker, it has a population of over 840.

History

Echunga gets its name from the Kaurna word “eechungga” which means “a short distance” or “close by”.

Initially settled in 1839, the town was laid out in 1849. In 1852, gold was discovered in the area and Echunga became the first proclaimed goldfield in the state. This caused a gold rush, however, it only lasted for a year.

In 1863, gold was discovered at the nearby suburb of Jupiter Creek. This was a much larger and long-lived field than those found in Echunga.

Echunga is a small, sleepy town. At the heart of the town is the Hagen Arms pub, which was named after John Hagen, the first European to settle in the area.
