Cowell is a town on the coast of Franklin Harbour in South Australia and is located almost 500km northwest of Adelaide. It has a population of about 1070 people.
History
In 1853, people began to farm in the area and exporters of wheat and wool used Franklin Harbor to load ships here. It soon led to a small settlement being set up here.
The town was named in 1880 after Sir John Clayton Cowell, who was the Lieutenant-Governor of Windsor Castle.

Cowell is a popular holiday spot, mainly because of its abundance of local marine and delicious seafood. The town has a strong fishing and oyster farming industry, and fresh oysters are available throughout the year.
Interesting activities in the area include night crabbing in the shallows of the harbour, visiting the 35 turbines at Mt Millar Wind Farm and the wetlands of Franklin Harbour Conservation Park.
