History
Many of Australia’s first European explorers landed near present-day Ceduna. The State Government began surveys of the area in the late 1800s. They proclaimed Ceduna a town in 1901.
By 1915, the town had a jetty and a railway siding. It became an important infrastructure centre in the area. A satellite facility in the area was vital to Australian telecommunications until recently.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Ceduna is a popular holiday spot. Tourists enjoy sheltered bays, accessible islands, and sandy beaches. As the gateway to the Nullarbor Plain, more than 240,000 vehicles pass through the town every year.
The town hosts an oyster festival each year to celebrate the famed oysters farmed on the coast. More than 6,000 people attend. Several indigenous communities live in the area.
