History

The suburb takes its name from Blackwood Inn. This was a small hotel operating in the area in the 19th century. The first houses were built in Blackwood in 1879. The first railway arrived in 1883. A Post Office followed in 1859.

The Post Office was originally called Belair Post Office. It took the name Blackwood in 1881.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The most conspicuous landmark in Blackwood is the Blackwood Soldier’s Memorial. Visitors also enjoy Wittunga Botanic Garden. The garden was built as a private home in 1901. Today, it features South African and Australian plants.
