Barmera lies in the beautiful Riverland region of South Australia. Located on the shores of Lake Bonney, it has just over 3,000 inhabitants. 220 kilometres separate the small town from the state capital Adelaide.
History
The word Barmera is of Aboriginal origin and could either mean “water place” or “land dwellers. The first Europeans settled here in the second half of the 19th century. That’s also when the Overland Corner Hotel first opened its doors. During the Second World War, Barmera was the site of Australia’s biggest internment camp.

Today Barmera is surrounded by lots of farmland, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t find plenty to do. Visit some of the heritage-listed buildings such as the Bonney Theatre or the Barmera Irrigation Office. Or head to the shores of Lake Bonney to take a boat trip, sail or simply relax on the sandy beach.
