History

In 1838, the explorers John Hill and George Imlay camped in Athelstone. The first Europeans to visit the area, they were on their way to the Murray River.

The district’s name comes from John Coulls, who bought a house and mill there in 1845. He named this house At Helstone after his city of birth, and the area was soon renamed Athelstone. The Athelstone Post Office was established in 1863.

Athelstone is defined by the River Torrens, which borders the area. The Black Hill Conservation Park also lies on the edge of the suburb.
