Angaston is a town in South Australia’s Barossa Valley. It is 77km northeast of Adelaide. It has a population of over 1,800.

The area was once home to the Peramangk people.

The town was founded as ‘German Pass’.

It became ‘Angaston’ to honour George Fife Angas. He settled in the area in the 1850s. He played a significant role in the early days of South Australia. He served as a member of the first South Australian Legislative Council.

The Barossa Valley railway line opened in 1911. Angaston was its terminus. The railway has since closed and replaced by a bike path. It runs to the Valley’s commercial centre, Nuriootpa.

Angaston is one of the three major towns of the Barossa Valley. The Valley is a major wine-producing region and tourist destination.

Angaston has an elevation of 347 metres. It is one of the highest points in the Barossa Valley.

Award-winning winery Yalumba is just outside Angaston. Established in 1849, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery.
