History

To begin with, an indigenous people called the Kaurna lived in the area. The British arrived in 1836. In 1838 the South Australian Police Force was set up to deal with rising crime.

The first person to have a death sentence by hanging carried out in the state was Michael Magee. He had committed a robbery (during which the sheriff was injured).

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The 21st century has seen a lot of development in Adelaide. Some old buildings have been converted so that they can be used for modern-day purposes.

Education contributes a lot to the Adelaide economy. There are many overseas students, a number of whom go to secondary schools. Three Nobel Prize winners were born in Adelaide. They are the physicist William Laurence Bragg, and the pathologists Howard Florey and Robin Warren.
