Yungaburra is a town in the Atherton Tablelands region of Queensland. It’s part of the Tablelands Regional Council local government area. Yungaburra has a population of more than 1,100, and its economy is based on tourism.
History
Long before overseas settlers showed up, the Yungaburra area was home to 16 different indigenous peoples. Of these, the Yidinji and Ngajanji were the most prominent. The first Europeans here were passing miners, who it as a campsite. It became known as Allumbah Pocket, and was surveyed in 1886. The name got changed to Yungaburra in 1910, which was also when the town was connected to the railway line.

A gorgeous expanse of green plains, lush forests and glittering lakes, Yungaburra’s surrounds are hugely popular with visitors. The Peterson Creek Wildlife & Botanical Walking Track is a great way to see some rare animals. The fascinating Curtain Fig Tree is a must-visit, as is the Yungaburra Platypus Viewing Area. The town is brimming with pubs, cafes and restaurants, all of whom can do magical things with the region’s rich local produce.
