History

Yorkeys Knob’s unusual name comes from George Lawson. Lawson was a beche-de-mer fisherman who was born in Yorkshire. In early accounts, the area is called Yorkie or Yorky.

William Varley and his wife bought most of the area in 1920. Over the next two decades, beachfront houses were built in the area. In 1927, Yorkeys Knob opened a hotel.
