Woree is a suburb to the south of Cairns in Queensland. It sits next to the main highway and has a population of just under 4,500 people.

History

The area around Woree and Cairns was settled in the 1870s. Suburbs like Woree grew around Cairns as people were attracted to the area. Initially it was due to the gold rush, then later by importing and exporting goods such as sugar cane.

The town sits on the Bruce Highway and is more than 1,600 kilometres away from the state capital of Brisbane.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Woree used to have its own drive-in movie theatre but that closed. Now it is home to Cannon Park, Cairns’ premier horse racing track.

Other amenities include fast food restaurants, retail outlets and tourist accommodation.
