History
Urangan is in Hervey Bay. The suburb is near the Great Sandy Strait and Fraser Island, known as K’gari to the Butchulla people. The Butchulla people are the traditional custodians of the area.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Urangan is home to a harbour that ferries use to get to Fraser Island. A heritage-listed site, Fraser Island is a great spot for whale watching. The suburb preserves pieces of Queensland’s more recent history. Block D at the Urangan Point State School, for example, is an intact example of a rural school building from the early 1900s. It is a heritage-listed site.
It also has botanic gardens known as the Great Sandy Region Botanic Gardens, or the Hervey Bay Botanical Gardens. The gardens boast an Orchid House, which houses around 20,000 orchids.
