History

Landowner Richard Drew named the Village of Toowong in 1865. Development sprang up in the region when the Ipswich railway line came through in 1875. In those days, Toowong was mainly home to the area’s upper middle class.

Toowong is home to Brisbane General Cemetery. The Cemetery opened in 1875. It is the largest in Queensland. The folk song “Brisbane Ladies” includes the line “Farewell and adieu, you maids of Toowong”.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Toowong centres on Toowong Village, an office town and shopping centre. Otherwise, the suburb is mainly a residential area. It boasts a range of venues including the Regatta and Royal Exchange Hotels.
